Lesson from Spark…

My dog rolled. I think it was a dead bird or something. This wasn’t the first time either, he did this last week. Now don’t take me wrong, he’s not a bad dog. He just has the natural dog-tendency to roll in repulsive stuff! While I was giving him a bath, I asked him why he did it.

Spark: “I know it’s bad, Jent, but when I caught a whiff I couldn’t help but follow the scent trail.”
Me: “Sure, but why did you allow the scent to distract you and lead you off?”
Spark: “Because it smelled good!”
Me: “Have you realized that it may seem to smell good (to you), but the effects are stinky? No one wanted you to get close to them because of the smell! Haven’t I told you before that it stinks?”
Spark: “Yeah, you tell me that every time…”
Me: “So why exactly did you roll?”
Spark: “I just couldn’t help it. When I got close, my body just overpowered. I couldn’t even think about what I was doing.”
Me: “Well, when you first caught the scent, if you would have turned around and run back to me, it would have kept you from doing this deed. You wouldn’t even have to be getting a bath right now! No matter what you’ve done, I want you to know that I love you.”

God: “Jent, why did you commit that sin?”
Me: “I was tempted and fell to it. It was as if I was overcome and I couldn’t help it.”
God: “Why did you allow the temptation to lead you astray?”
Me: “Because it was pleasing.”
God: “Have you realized that sin’s pleasure is temporary and that shortly after you sin you feel worse than you did before?”
Me: “Yeah, I realize. But in the moment it’s hard to remember.”
God: “Well, the moment you sensed temptation, if you would have turned around and come to me, you wouldn’t have fallen. And remember, I have promised a way of escape for every temptation you will ever face! (See 1 Corinthians 10:13) Run to Jesus, you’ll find strength instead of stench! One more thing, no matter what you’ve done, I want you to know that I love you.”
